The Burton Cool Suit - You Can't Fight City Hall
For Love Is My Velocity's second full length release (and following in neat alphabetical order from our last release Bamodi) we wish to introduce you all to The Burton Cool Suit. For those that are unfamiliar with the band, we'd say that The Burton Cool Suit write killer offbeat pop tunes with a huge garage beat. An about-face for the label from our last noise-punk release by Bamodi perhaps, but no less as captivating - aside from showcasing their obvious musical chops (and mutton chops), Burton's live shows demonstrate the easy comradeship and huge multi-layered sound that made them an obvious choice for Love Is My Velocity, and no doubt for you.
We've been fans for while, checking them out in their natural habitat of ground shaking pub shows in Perth as well as seeing them when they stepped up to bigger and better things, such as playing with Steven Malkmus and the Jicks, Idlewild and Youth Group for instance. Formed out of the ashes of Turnstyle, The Frantics and the million and one bands that their drummer Adrian MacMillan has been in, they released a self-titled album in 2005, but now with their second full length 'You Can't Fight City Hall' they've stepped up to the plate, come to the party and rose above the rest of those kinds of metaphors to produce a great album of garage pop. We're not sure if that is actually a genre, but you get our drift...
With their new album, pop culture references sit side by side with more personal stories of everyday life soundtracked with Adem K's steady vocals. 'Swampi Swami', 'SQ' and 'I Get Out Of Breath' bring the garage and sixties influence to the forefront, whilst both the title track 'You Can't Fight City Hall' and 'Let It Go' marry lyrical subjects of disappointment and frustration with melodic hooks. Always interesting, Burton's songs often take unpredictable turns and provide nifty twists and catchy endings.
The album recorded by longtime friend and associate Laurie Sinagra is distributed nationally through Green/MGM Distribution from December 2007.
